The Officials' Demand
After the search of Tomogi, the officials demanded three hostages. Mokichi, Ichizo, and Kichijiro volunteered. They were taken to Nagasaki for interrogation.
The Interrogation
They were ordered to trample the fumie. Kichijiro did so, but Mokichi and Ichizo hesitated. They eventually confessed to being Christians.

The Sentence
Mokichi and Ichizo were sentenced to the water punishment. They were tied to stakes in the sea at Tomogi beach. The tide would drown them slowly.
The Execution
They were fastened to the stakes as the tide came in. They endured for two days. Mokichi sang hymns. Ichizo was silent. Their bodies were burned and thrown into the sea.

Rodrigues' Witness
From the Mountain Hut
Rodrigues watched from the mountain as the two men suffered. He heard Mokichi's hymn: 'We're on our way to the temple of Paradise.' He felt the silence of God.
Aftermath
The deaths broke Rodrigues' spirit. He began to question God's silence. This was a turning point in his faith.
